Freemasonry is the fraternal organization that Rizal have joined during his stay in Madrid, Spain. It began in the late 16th century until the early 17th century. It is administratively organized into Grand Lodges, each with their own independent administration. They teach to promote each other welfare and rejoice in each other's prosperity, giving a pure genuine hearts and feeling, friendliness to one another. They teach also about a better chance of living happily. If there are certain disasters, the fraternity is confidently giving their full support financially.
During his stay in Naples, Jose Rizal was impressed how the Masons professed the death of the Italian patriot, Guiseppe Garibaldi through posters. The action caught his attention and suddenly became interested with Masonry. He was deeply influenced by Miguel Morayta, Prfoessor of history at the Universidad Central de Madrid, and ex-Prseident Fransisco Pi y Margal, both master masons and both staunch advocates of Philippine independence from Spain. These men ultimately played a significant role facilitating Dr. Rizal's membership at the Acacia Lodge No. 9 Grand Orientes de Espana in Madrid. Hence, he joined the brotherhood on March 1883.

Reasons why Rizal joined the organization:
- To secure Freemasonry's aid in his fight against the friars in thePhilippines
- He was influenced by Morayta & Margal, who were staunch supporters of Pilippine independence
- As part of his mission of extending networks with German philosophers & scientists
